What to Do on Ketam Island (Pulau Ketam)
1. Crab spotting
Ketam Island is a popular tourist destination for crab lovers and a great place to see crabs up close. The island is home to hundreds of them, and they can often be seen crawling around in the muddy ground, which is exposed during low tide. You can get a good view of the crabs from the pier and sometimes even see the local dogs playing in the mud. In case you’re wondering, the crabs are not to eat.
2. Exploring the streets
Ketam Island is a refreshing change of pace from the hustle and bustle of city life. The small island community is known for its laid-back atmosphere and neighbourly spirit. Almost every house on this island has its doors wide open, a stark contrast to the locked apartments in cities.
What’s more interesting is that most homes are either made of wood, concrete, or a mix of both, which we rarely see in the city. While the lack of a plumbing system is a bit of an issue – all the waste goes straight into the water, the clean roads and well-paved roads make up for it. Despite the lack of amenities, Ketam Island is a charming place to explore and experience a different way of life.
3. Cycling around the island
Looking for a change of pace from all the water-based activities? Then it’s time to rent a bike and explore the island by pedal power! Biking is the primary mode of transport around the village, so you’ll have no problem getting around. You can rent an electric bike or a regular pedal-type from one of the many shops in the village.
Since the roads are narrow, you’ll want to avoid hitting anyone with your bike or falling off the walkway! But don’t worry, it’s all part of the fun. This island is a great place to explore by bike, with plenty of scenic spots to enjoy. So why not get out and see the island in a whole new way?
